The Alabama Museum of Natural History dates back to 1831 when The University of Alabama's first librarian created a "cabinet" of natural history specimens. Union Troops destroyed the collections when they burned the campus in 1865, but the Museum rose again seven years later when Professor Eugene Allen Smith, known today as the Father of the Alabama Museum of Natural History, began to assemble the present collections. Smith Hall was the first building erected on the campus in the 20th century. Professor Smith designed the building and oversaw its construction, serving as Museum Director until his death in 1927.
